Nestled amidst the lush forests of the Black Sea region in Turkey lies a hidden gem that seems to have stepped out of a fairy tale: Safranbolu. This enchanting town, with its well-preserved Ottoman architecture and cobblestone streets, is not just a destination; it's a journey back in time.

One of the most significant aspects of Safranbolu's history is its remarkable Ottoman architecture. The town is renowned for its well-preserved traditional houses, mosques, and caravanserais, many of which date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. These structures, characterized by their wooden facades, overhanging upper floors, and ornate detailing, earned Safranbolu UNESCO World Heritage status in 1994.

History

The town's recorded history begins around the 3rd century BC when it was known as "Zalifre" during the Roman period. During the Byzantine era, the town was known as "Theodoroupolis" and served as a strategic outpost. It later came under the rule of the Seljuk Turks in the 11th century, becoming an important trading center on the route between Constantinople (Istanbul) and the Black Sea ports.

Safranbolu flourished under Ottoman rule, particularly during the 17th and 18th centuries. Its strategic location on trade routes contributed to its prosperity, and the town became known for its production of saffron, a valuable spice derived from the crocus flower. The name "Safranbolu" itself is believed to derive from the Turkish words "safran" (saffron) and "bolu" (land).

The meticulously restored Ottoman houses, adorned with intricately carved wooden facades known as "safranbolu işlemesi," stand as silent witnesses to centuries of history. Each street corner reveals a new story, a new glimpse into the town's past.

What makes Safranbolu truly special is its commitment to preserving its heritage while embracing modernity. The town's UNESCO designation has spurred efforts to safeguard its historic buildings and promote sustainable tourism practices. Yet, amidst the preservation efforts, there's a sense of vitality and innovation, with local artisans keeping ancient crafts alive and young entrepreneurs breathing new life into historic buildings through boutique hotels and trendy cafes.

Cuisine

Safranbolu isn't just a visual delight; it's a treat for all the senses. The aroma of freshly brewed Turkish tea wafts through the air, inviting you to sit and savor the moment in one of the quaint tea houses. Don't forget to indulge in the town's culinary delights, from savory pastries filled with local cheeses to sweet treats like "lokum" (Turkish delight) and "cevizli sucuk" (walnut sausage). Don't hesitate to try saffron-based products as well as famous local food.

While the old town is undeniably the heart of Safranbolu, there's much more to explore beyond its cobblestone streets. Take a leisurely stroll along the banks of the Bulak Cave, where the gentle sound of flowing water provides a serene backdrop to nature's beauty. Or venture out to the nearby village of Yörük Köyü to witness traditional Turkish village life and perhaps even enjoy a homemade meal with a local family.

• Explore the historic bazaar district on foot.
• Take a Turkish coffee break at the Governor's Mansion Visitor Center (Kaymakamlar Gezi Evi).
• Cinci Hanı is worth visiting not only for its architecture but also for its coffee museum and restaurant.
• Climb up the castle and enjoy the view. Here, you can explore both the Miniature Clock Tower Museum and the City History Museum as well as Clock Tower.
• Enjoy panoramic views from Hıdırlık Hill.
• If you're interested in nature and canyons, visit the Bulak Mencili Cave Canyon and Crystal Terrace to see the panaromic view of the Canyon located just 10 km outside the city.

1. You can explore this small town on foot. Although the hills may require a bit of effort. You can check the impressive Amasra Castle, which offers panoramic views of the town and the sea beyond. Standing atop the castle walls, you marvel at the breathtaking vistas, imagining the countless tales of conquests and adventures that unfolded here over the centuries.

Descending from the castle, you can go through the town's historic quarter, where centuries-old mosques, churches, and Ottoman mansions stood as silent witnesses to Amasra's storied past. The Archaeological Museum provided a fascinating insight into the region's ancient civilizations, with artifacts dating back to the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods.

Nature

Don't miss immersing yourself in Amasra's natural beauty. Start by exploring the town's two picturesque beaches, Çekiciler Beach and Akçakoca Beach, both offering pristine sands and crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Taking a leisurely stroll along the seaside promenade, you can admire the colorful fishing boats bobbing in the harbor and savored the fresh sea breeze.

Moreover you can visit the greenery of Amasra's surrounding countryside. The nearby Küçük Liman (Little Harbor) provided a tranquil escape from the bustling town, with its serene atmosphere and verdant landscapes.

No visit to Amasra would be complete without indulging in its delectable culinary offerings. Start your day with a traditional Turkish breakfast at a local cafe, feasting on an array of fresh bread, olives, cheeses, and jams. For lunch, sample the town's famous seafood at a charming waterfront restaurant, savoring the flavors of freshly caught fish and seafood mezes.

• When you arrive at the port, take a tour around the peninsula with a boat. Make sure to wear thick clothing no matter what season it is.
• Follow the ancient path to reach the historic "Kemere Bridge".
• Climb to the top of the historical castle and enjoy the panoramic view.
• Taste some of Amasra's signature dishes. Try varieties of fish food as well as stuffed mussels, hamsi (anchovy).

Iztuzu Beach

A Pure eden Iztuzu Beach, a magnificent stretch of golden sand and a protected breeding ground for the threatened loggerhead (Caretta Caretta) sea turtles, is a highlight of every boat tour in Dalyan. This magnificent beach offers a tranquil and untouched environment with its turquoise crystal-clear seas. Swim in the cool water, bask in the sun, or just unwind in this unspoiled paradise's serene atmosphere.

                                    

Mud Baths & Thermal Springs

No trip to Dalyan would be complete without taking advantage of the city's famed mud baths and thermal springs. Locals and tourists alike throng to these natural wonders for rest and renewal because it is said that they have healing characteristics. Put on the mineral-rich mud, allow it to dry, then wash it off in the hot thermal waters. Not only is this unusual sensation delightful, but it also revitalizes and reenergizes your skin.

A Wild Life Heaven - Dalyan Delta 

For lovers of the environment, the protected Dalyan Delta is a veritable gold mine. You can see a variety of bird species, such as herons, egrets, and kingfishers, during your boat journey in this rich habitat. Watch for the elusive Caretta Caretta sea turtles as they gently swim through the currents of the river. This pristine setting serves as a haven for a variety of wildlife, providing nature lovers with an amazing experience. The river connects the lake to the sea therefore it creates a unique habitat for the wildlife. The unique blue crab is one of them.

                                

Exploring Ancient Ruins

There are also intriguing ancient ruins in Dalyan that are well worth visiting. Take a break from your boat tour and explore the ruins of an ancient theater, an agora, and the famous city walls in Caunos, an ancient city. Learn about the region's rich history and architectural wonders, which will take you back in time and give you a peek at earlier civilizations.

Tips:

• There are a variety of riverboats with varied costs that do not jump to the first one. First, learn all the alternatives and then make your choice. 
• There are many riverside restaurants but I do not have any favorite restaurant in Dalyan. I prefer to eat in Gocek because of its high quality.
• If you like yogurt you may try the Turkish traditional drink Ayran which is mixed with yogurt, water, and salt.  
• Iztuzu beach is shallow, however, it can be very wavy.
• There are two mud baths one of them is bigger than the other one. The floor is very slippery around the mud baths be careful. 
• Do not stay more than 10 minutes in the hot thermal springs which increases the heart rate. 

A Slow Citta City: Koycegiz

This charming hamlet, located on the banks of Lake Koycegiz and surrounded by stunning scenery, provides a tranquil haven away from crowded tourist hotspots. The captivating Lake Koycegiz, a serene paradise that enchants visitors with its immaculate beauty, is located in the center of Koycegiz. Take a leisurely boat excursion through the calm seas and take in the surrounding lush vegetation, mountains, and strewn islets. Enjoy the serene atmosphere, the sound of the water lapping, and the breathtaking panoramic views that appear before your eyes.

                            

 If you want to take a rest and appreciate the view, there are many cafes by the lake where you can take a break and enjoy. 

                            

Mud Baths and Thermal Springs

Natural hot springs and therapeutic mud baths are well-known attractions in Koycegiz. Enjoy the special experience of being covered in warm, mineral-rich mud, which is said to provide a number of health advantages for the body and skin. Rinse off in the energizing thermal springs afterward, enabling the warm water to relax your muscles and leave you feeling renewed.

Caunos Ancient City

Discover the ancient city of Caunos, which is close to Koycegiz, and travel back in time. Explore the well-preserved ruins, which include an amphitheater, Roman baths, and recognizable cliffside rock tombs. Admire the architectural wonders while learning about this ancient civilization's interesting history. You will be rewarded with a mesmerizing look at the surrounding surroundings thanks to the hilltop's panoramic views.

Nature Beauty: Dalyan Delta

Discover the stunning natural features of the Dalyan Delta, which is not far from Koycegiz. Go on a boat excursion and travel through the maze of reed-lined rivers while observing a variety of flora and fauna. Watch for the gently gliding Caretta caretta sea turtles as they go across the water. Yuvarlakçay

If you're looking for a cool place to escape from the hot weather and chill out go to Yuvarlak Çay which is 8 kilometers (5 miles) away from Koycegiz. 

Far away from the crowds and chaos of city life, this hidden gem offers a serene retreat for nature enthusiasts and tranquility seekers alike. As you arrive in Yuvarlakçay, you'll be greeted by a sense of calm that permeates the air, inviting you to slow down and immerse yourself in the beauty of your surroundings. There are many restaurants in this area and my favorite place in this location is Akarsu. 

One of the village's standout features is its breathtaking river, after which it is named. The crystal-clear waters of Yuvarlakçay flow gently, reflecting the vibrant hues of the surrounding flora. It's no wonder that locals and visitors alike are drawn to its banks, seeking solace in its peaceful ambiance. Whether you choose to dip your toes in the cool water or find a shady spot to relax and unwind, the river offers the perfect respite from the heat of the Turkish sun.

Oludeniz Beach is a beautiful stretch of sand that provides a delightful coastal experience. It is located close to the Blue Lagoon. Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the beach while listening to the soothing sound of the waves and feeling the smooth sand between your toes. There are several coastal cafés and bars lining the beach where you can eat delectable Turkish food and cool drinks while taking in the expansive views of the Mediterranean Sea.

 Oludeniz is a sanctuary of exhilarating water activities for thrill seekers. To get your heart racing, try activities like jet skiing, wakeboarding, or banana boat rides. Exploring Butterfly Valley

A hidden jewel that will take you to a mystical world is Butterfly Valley, which is only a short boat journey from Oludeniz. This remote sanctuary, which is only reachable by boat or a hiking trail, is home to more than 80 different species of butterflies. Visit the bustling markets, look around the specialty stores selling handcrafted items from the region, and savor traditional Turkish cuisine in the quaint cafés and restaurants. Don't miss the chance to enjoy a cool drink and toast to Oludeniz's beauty while watching the spectacular sunset from one of the seaside bars. Keep in mind that there are cafe bars around the charming lagoon, as well.
